Knocking Down Giants One At A Time – True Story
Back in 2001, a young man was sitting in a jail cell reading an old Black Enterprise magazine that featured prominent black entrepreneurs. This inspired him because he had never known or heard of so many people of his race doing so well financially. Eventually, he turned to an article about a famous attorney, turned tycoon, named Willie E. Gary. Once upon a time, this young man served time for a foolish mistake that he made during a desperate time in his life. Later, he enrolled into a university; he had to lie about his drug offense on the financial aid form to gain financial support to continue his education. Moreover, he was able to start school in the spring of 2002 – a dream come true.
One evening, a “60 Minutes” commercial came on during an NFL game featuring a man labeled the “Giant Killer.” The snippet caught his attention, so he kept it on the same channel until the football game was over. When it came back on, he immediately recognized this “Giant Killer” as attorney Willie E. Gary. The young man was amazed by the fact that Mr. Gary, who had been an underdog all his life owned 10 Bentleys and two lavish private jets. The financial power tickled the young man’s ambitious spirit. Money like that in the right hands can change many worlds by creating jobs and scholarships. Imagine the number of community centers that could be built to circumvent black-on-black crime.

At the time of the “60 Minutes” interview, Mr. Gary had joined forces with the late attorney Johnnie Cochran (made globally famous during the O.J. Simpson trial) and with him had won a $240 million lawsuit against Disney World. Mr. Cochran and Mr. Gary were able to prove to a jury that the theme park had stolen an architect’s idea for a sports theme park. The two attorneys were part of a team of attorneys and black activists who were seeking reparations from corporations, many of which changed names, and the U.S. government for profiting from slavery.
Five years later, the young man was invited to a 2006 Christmas party by his business mentor, Ms. Brown, who happened to be a personal friend of Mr. Gary. She convinced the young man to use his talents as a club promoter and start Sky View Marketing.Net, his first marketing company. There were about 2,000 people at the party, The Temptations performed and former President Bill Clinton, fight promoter Don King and old school rapper Biz Marquee were there.
For the party, Mr. Gary closed off the ocean side of the street where his office was located. All you had to do was bring some canned goods for admission. Two weeks after the party, the young man bumped into Mr. Gary at a boxing match hosted by Don King at the Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood, FL. The two men exchanged pleasantries and went on about their business. When the young man told his mentor what had happened, she asked him, “Why didn’t you take a picture with him because you may not ever see him again?” His response to her was that, “I know I will not only see him, but I will somehow, someway do business with him.”
Eight years later, that young man held on to that dream until he actually was able to make it a reality. Ladies and gentlemen, that young man would become known as King Kevin Dorival.
When I interviewed Mr. Gary in his office for “The Courage To Believe” documentary, the positive energy was electrifying. True Story.
