A Long Wait – Finally I can vote in 2016
Nearly 6 million citizens cannot vote due to felony disenfranchisement laws. I haven’t voted since 2001, when Bill Clinton came into office. Most of the voters were appeased with Clinton, unbeknownst the damage him and his wife, then senator, Hillary Clinton would unleash into the black communities of America. Their “War Against Drugs” was a war cry and slaughter of the black family structure, as we once knew it. The prison population rose by 673,000, and the federal prisoners grew more than it did under the previous 12-years of Republican rule, combined. Their political Dynasty has helped America become the largest prison population in the world. For Blacks in the United States, the journey to the ballot box has always been a challenging one. And for millions of African Americans, who figure prominently among the road to the polls remains a steep one.
It’s been 15 years since my last waltz at the ballot, and in a few months, I’ll be pacing myself. Every vote counts, but I’m not so sure I’ll be excited about the opportunity this time around. Most people that have my melaninated skin color with a felony conviction, or any sort of criminal record usually default to a life of crime or a mundane job that they dread going to. (Read my 2014 blog article: I Wish I Could Vote) God has blessed me to avoid that dreadful train of life, but I can only imagine how many of my brothers and sisters are sharing that plight. Hope is not lost – get a plan to improve our future and stick to it!
With the political comedy show on full swing, it’s difficult to say what, or who will win next after, President Obama and the First Family leaves the white house. I can’t say that I’m anti-Donald Trump, or pro-Bernie Sanders. One thing is for sure; I’m not caught up in the hype for Ms. Clinton or Ted Cruz. This is going to be one interesting election. People are threatening to leave the country if Mr. Trump wins. I’m opportunistic about the possibility that he will surpass what President Obama, was able to do to improve the economy, and with his business savvy – decrease the unemployment rate! Other than that, he sounds like the complete business tycoon buffoon that he fights hard to remind us.
I just hope to vote in peace and to finally make my voice be heard during the 2016 presidential election. I’m 36 years old, and it is my desire to see everyone that can vote – vote!
