Once Upon A Time on Black Wall Street in Tulsa
Black Folks Had It Going On Once Upon A Time. Black Wall Street in Tulsa, Oklahoma was the most lucrative black community during the country in the early 1900’s. The community flourished so much that the neighboring whites who created the Jim Crow Laws began to get extremely jealous of the black entrepreneurs, the black doctors, the black airplane owners, the black bus system, and over 600 black owned successful businesses. Among these were 21 Churches, 21 Restaurants, 30 Grocery Stores and 12 Movie Theaters, plus a Hospital, a Bank, a Post Office, Libraries, Schools, and Law Offices. The black community supported their people and encouraged each other by breaking bread with amongst themselves (something we are slacking in today as a community). Spending their money and investing in each other. ** The money made by African Americans in the community would bounce around 20 to 36 times amongst each other before leaving the black community. **
On June 1, 1921 all of this came to a crashing end thanks to the KKK and their racists supporters of haters; they burned the prosperous black towns down with fire bombs from airplanes and machine guns. 3,000 blacks folks died and over 1,500 homes were set on fire. May all of these families rest in peace but its going to be hard since there hasn’t been any justice, arrests or financial contributions to the survivors or their families of this massacre.
Today, every dollar we get (on a large scale) is spent everywhere else (hair/weave stores, grocery stores, clothes, gas, etc. . .) except with the black business owners. This was is something that was on my spirit for a while. Stayed tuned for my thought provoking video and blog article that will elaborate on this subject. Your participation with comments and sharing this article are more than welcomed.
~ Black folks will have it going on once again! ~ Knowing our #history is paramount, especially for the youth. Cases like Trayvon Martin (RIP) is a small drop in the bucket because injustice has been going on for decades and centuries. Be Blessed . . .
Thanks for reading this article and I would love to hear your thoughts on this subject.
