2012 Black Writers Reunion & Conference Experience
The exuberance of energy filled the Fort Lauderdale’s Westin hotel with some of world’s finest writers. The host did a superb job of putting together a talented group of writers, authors and poets. This proves to show that the African Americans are far greater than the typical areas of drama, welfare, and incarceration.

August 31, 2012 was a was beautiful sunny day with cool ocean breezes. I had the privilege of taking part in two out of the ten creative writing workshops. A well-known author and professor, Venise Berry, taught the first session, “Powerful Writing: Spirit, Nature and Experience.” Ms. Berry, explained how to improve our writing skills by using music, natural elements, and colors. We all had ten minutes to create a short story, and I took advantage of the situation to begin my action fantasy movie.
Secondly, the “Screenplay to the Silver Screen” workshop was orchestrated by Bryan-Keyth Wilson, from Texas, produced over twenty plays along with publishing a couple of books. In his course we were taught how to create a movie treatment and how to set up a play script. He was very funny, charismatic, and passionate about his writing profession.
There was no doubt in my mind that I was surrounded by the black heavy weights of the writing profession. The courses were worth more than the cover charge, especially the networking. The wealth of knowledge went far and beyond my expectations. I’ve even had the pleasures of doing business with two other the writers after the course. Just recently, October 18, 2012 Berlinda aka L.A. had me on her “Naked Conversations” radio show to do an author interview. I’ve even been able to gain a few Twitter friends from the conference: (@SherriceShomas,@Tia_Ross,@kimgreenwords,@Lasincere,@Bryankeyth,@KimGreen,@BwrcMedia).

Talented Writers From All Over The World
The best business component of the 2012 Black Writers Conference was that I meet writers from all over the world; a few from Texas, Chicago, North Carolina and even from the down under, Australia. In the script writing course I had the pleasures of setting next Kim Green, who gained national recognition for the ghostwriting of 2004 “American Idol” winner, Fantasia Barrino.
I had the pleasure of meeting the organizer of the event Tia Ross, who’s brilliance someone was overshadowed by her beautiful personality. I wanted to support the vendors so I bought book from two best-selling authors: Sherri Thomas (Hot Like Fire) and also from Kim Green (Hallucination).

My favorite part of the event was the Poetry Night segment. I’ve never been to a poetry event that had so many talented poets in my life and they were all women. Nakia R. Laushaul, Jamillah Warner and Ifalade T. Asanti were the artists that performed while I was there. All the poems were superb but Ashanti’s “Africa” poem dedicated a poem to Mrs. Ross, took the cake. To my surprise, one of the poets was an attorney. Unfortunately, this year is supposedly the last year of the Black Writers Conference.
Please, share your thoughts…
Blessings To You All!
